Floods in Safi – Investigation Underway and Efforts Focused on Local Crisis Management
The public prosecutor’s office at the Court of Appeal in Safi announced, via an official statement, that following the floodwaters that swept through the region on Sunday evening, December 14, 2025, resulting in the deaths of approximately 37 people according to preliminary reports, a judicial investigation has been launched by the judicial police to determine the true causes of the incident and uncover all its circumstances and ramifications.
These measures come in line with the commitment to precisely identify responsibilities, including the potential accountability of local authorities for any shortcomings in managing infrastructure projects and sanitation facilities, at a time when some are attempting to exploit this natural disaster for defamatory campaigns against the Kingdom.
It is important to emphasize that floods and deluges are considered natural disasters that occur in every country around the world, as witnessed in some Spanish cities like Valencia on previous occasions. Addressing such crises requires vigilance from local authorities and the ability to intervene rapidly to mitigate human and material losses.
Since the initial moments, local authorities have demonstrated their commitment to protecting citizens through early warnings and awareness campaigns, as well as mobilizing emergency and rescue teams to provide immediate assistance to those affected, alongside launching urgent programs to repair the damaged infrastructure.
This context clearly illustrates that efforts are focused on addressing the crisis at the local level. Any attempts to politicize the incident or demonize the national state are baseless and do not reflect the actual endeavors made by authorities to save lives and protect citizens. Experience confirms that the absolute priority is a swift humanitarian response and rehabilitation, far removed from any political or media exploitation of the disaster.
