Casablanca, Marrakech, and Agadir Lead African Cities in Rapid Bus Transit Systems

The platform “The African Exponent,” specializing in economic analysis and rankings, has classified the cities of Casablanca, Marrakech, and Agadir among the most prominent African urban centers with rapid bus transit systems (BRT) for 2025.

The report highlights Morocco’s distinction in North Africa for adopting several high-capacity urban transport systems. These cities have heavily invested in organized and modern bus networks, reflecting the government’s strategy to modernize urban mobility and enhance its efficiency.

The source mentions that the “Busway” system in Casablanca, inaugurated in March of last year, is among the largest and most technologically advanced. Additionally, the BRT system in Marrakech (which has been operational since September 2017) and Agadir’s “Trambus” complete national efforts to reduce congestion, improve passenger experience, and align transport with urban planning.

The report confirms that the selection of routes for these systems is based on areas with high population density and traffic congestion corridors. The “Busway” system connects crowded suburbs to commercial centers, while Marrakech’s system focuses on tourism and local mobility routes, and Agadir addresses seasonal tourist demand and residential mobility needs.

The platform emphasizes that operational efficiency is a key element in the success of these systems. All three systems are characterized by dedicated lanes, modern fleets, real-time GPS tracking, and station infrastructure that ensures passenger comfort and safety. The report states that monitoring traffic flows and passenger data aids in optimizing routes, schedules, and fleet distribution to ensure reliability and scalability as urban demand grows.

In conclusion, the platform points out that Morocco’s rapid bus transit networks represent a model for sustainable urban mobility in North Africa, combining investment in infrastructure, technology, and governance. This contributes to reducing congestion and supporting urban planning and economic productivity, showcasing how coordinated planning and multi-city execution position Morocco as a regional leader in high-capacity urban transport.
