The Public Prosecutor’s Office confirms the legitimacy of the arrest of Mohamed Zyan and clarifies the reason for his continued detention.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Appeal in Rabat issued a statement to clarify the legal status of inmate Mohamed Zyan, following the circulation of information on social media regarding his hunger strike and claims that he has been subject to arbitrary detention since Friday, November 21, after serving his prison sentence.
The statement indicated that the individual in question had previously been convicted in two cases: the first involved a definitive prison sentence of three years, which he began serving on November 21, 2022, and the second relates to the embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds. The investigating judge decided on January 10, 2024, to place him in pretrial detention pending this case, and the ruling was upheld on appeal on May 7, 2025, with a similar prison sentence, although Zyan has filed a cassation appeal against it.
The statement noted that Zyan’s continued detention after November 21, 2025, is legally justified, as he remains in pretrial detention for the second case. The Public Prosecutor’s Office submitted the request from his defense, made on November 4, 2025, to consolidate the sentences to the competent judicial authority, and the consideration of this request has been postponed to a session on November 26, 2025, at the defense’s request.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office emphasized that the detention does not involve any arbitrary actions and that it is committed to strict enforcement of the law regarding the individual’s criminal status.
