The European Union reaffirms its non-recognition of the so-called “Sahrawi Republic”
On Friday, the European Union reiterated that it does not recognize the so-called “Sahrawi Republic,” emphasizing that the presence of this entity at certain European Union-African Union meetings does not alter the official European stance.
Clarification to thwart separatist maneuvers
During the daily press briefing of the European Commission, the spokesperson for foreign affairs clarified this position amid attempts by some separatist parties to exploit the participation of the fictitious entity in the upcoming joint summit scheduled between November 24 and 27 in Luanda (Angola) to create misleading impressions.
Participation invitations are the sole prerogative of the African Union
The spokesperson confirmed that the summits and ministerial meetings between the European Union and the African Union are organized jointly; however, each party invites only its members, meaning that invitations to African countries are exclusively under the authority of the African Union.
A steady position not affected by formal participation
The European official stressed that “neither the European Union nor any of its member states recognizes the alleged entity,” adding that its participation, whether in ministerial meetings or summit-level encounters, “never alters Brussels’ steadfast position.”
