Myanmar: Nearly 1,600 Foreigners Arrested in Cyber Fraud Center

Myanmar authorities announced yesterday that approximately 1,600 foreigners were detained during raids targeting a cyber fraud center located on the border with Thailand.

According to a statement published in the “Global New Light of Myanmar,” “1,590 foreigners who entered the country illegally” were arrested between November 18 and 22 during security operations in the Shwe Kokko area of the Golden Triangle.

The same source stated that authorities confiscated thousands of devices, including “101 Starlink satellite receivers.”

Since February, Myanmar’s armed forces have intensified operations against these illegal factories sprawling in the rugged regions of the Golden Triangle, where these centers exploit individuals, voluntarily or forcibly, to defraud money from users online around the world.

In mid-October, a journalistic investigation revealed that these fraud networks were utilizing the internet service provided by Elon Musk’s Starlink to conduct their operations, which cost victims billions of dollars annually. Starlink later announced the disabling of over 2,500 devices near centers suspected of involvement in cyber fraud.
