Morocco Climbs to Sixth Place Globally in Climate Change Performance Index for 2026

Morocco has made a significant leap in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) for 2026, securing the sixth position worldwide. These achievements, which have garnered international recognition, reflect the kingdom’s ongoing efforts to combat climate change.

According to the CCPI report prepared by the NewClimate Institute, Germanwatch, and the Climate Action Network (CAN), Morocco has received “high” and even “very high” ratings in several key categories, including:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Energy efficiency.
  • Climate policies.

The report noted that carbon dioxide emissions per capita in Morocco remain “very low.”

Strong Measures: Review of Nationally Determined Contributions and Phasing Out Coal
The report highlighted a set of structural measures that have contributed to this progress, most prominently:

  • A review of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in line with the Paris Agreement.
  • A gradual plan to phase out coal by 2040, demonstrating a clear commitment to a more sustainable energy transition.

Sustainable Investments in Transportation and Climate Adaptation
The CCPI also pointed to Morocco’s significant investments in public transportation, particularly rail, which supports a less polluting transportation model and encourages a shift in transport modes.

This includes the national strategic plan for adaptation, imposing strict environmental standards on new buildings, thereby enhancing the kingdom’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Existing Challenges: Renewable Energy and Accelerating Progress
Despite these advancements, the report indicated some weaknesses, with the renewable energy category described as less robust compared to others.

Experts have recommended accelerating the deployment of solar and wind energy capabilities and providing a more supportive legislative framework for citizen participation in renewable energy production.

Global Recognition and African Leadership
With its sixth-place ranking, Morocco now stands among the best countries globally in climate action and remains the leading non-European country in the index.

These results strengthen the kingdom’s reputation as a regional leader in sustainable development.
