Morocco: A Global Destination for Surfing Enthusiasts from Taghazout to Dakhla
A report published by the French platform GEO.FR reveals that Morocco has emerged as one of the premier global destinations for surfing enthusiasts, thanks to its diverse coastal sites stretching from Taghazout to Dakhla, offering experiences suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to professionals.
The report highlights Taghazout, a coastal village located 20 kilometers north of Agadir, which is undeniably the surfing capital of the kingdom. It combines golden beaches with perfect waves. Anchor Point is the most famous spot among professionals for its long, powerful waves, while Panorama Beach attracts beginners with its consistent, gentle swells.
Emher was also featured in the report, located between Essaouira and Agadir, described as a “magical bay,” which includes two main spots: The Cathedral, meant for seasoned surfers with its fast waves, and The Bay, known for its smooth, long waves ideal for beginners and longboarders.
In this context, the source pointed out that Essaouira, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a unique spot not only for surfing but also for kitesurfing and windsurfing, thanks to the steady trade winds. Sidi Kaouki Beach, south of the city, enjoys great popularity due to the quality of its waves and stable winds.
Meanwhile, although less renowned, Safi is home to some of the best barrel waves in Morocco, making it a favored destination for professionals and competitors in international championships. Nearby Lalla Fatna Beach offers suitable conditions for intermediates, thanks to its high-quality waves.
In the far south, Dakhla has emerged as a rising destination that blends desert and ocean, ideal for both surfing and kitesurfing, especially at Foum Labouir and Aariysh, known for their strong waves and consistent winds.
The report concludes by mentioning Mirleft, a quiet village south of Agadir, calling it a “hidden treasure” for surfing lovers, offering an authentic experience away from the crowds. Its rugged beaches like Aftass cater to intermediate surfers, complemented by serene atmospheres making it an ideal place to relax after a day on the water.
