Marrakesh Hosts the Largest Global Gathering of Police Leaders as the 93rd Interpol General Assembly Kicks Off

The third session of the 93rd General Assembly of the International Criminal Police Organization, or Interpol, commenced on Monday morning in Marrakesh. This event further solidifies Morocco’s presence in the international efforts to combat organized crime and enhance multilateral security cooperation. The opening session was attended by high-ranking officials and heads of police agencies from the 196 member countries.

The session began with speeches from the Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance, Abdelatif Hammouchi, and the President of Interpol, Major General Ahmed Naser al-Raisi. They discussed the evolving landscape of transnational crime and the world’s need for more robust coordination mechanisms among police forces. Notable Moroccan officials present included Minister of Interior Abdelouafi Laftit, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita, and the Minister Delegate in charge of the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, along with Interpol’s Secretary General, Komorowski Valdis, and several Arab and international figures.

During the opening, a video showcasing the evolution of Moroccan police institutions was presented, highlighting the dynamics within security services in recent years. This annual gathering is the largest appointment for law enforcement leaders worldwide and serves as an opportunity for member states to exchange experiences and discuss emerging challenges.

The selection of Marrakesh to host this significant event reflects Morocco’s established standing on regional and international levels, bolstered by the security vision led by King Mohammed VI and the credibility that security institutions have built in combating terrorism and transnational crime.

This assembly will discuss prominent issues, including dismantling organized crime networks, combating transnational fraud centers, supporting global policing capabilities, and enhancing women’s presence in the security sector. It will also examine the results of the experimental project “Silver Bulletin” and the path towards ratifying the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.

During this session, the General Assembly is expected to elect new members to the executive committee and a new president for the organization as the current term concludes. The General Assembly is the highest body that outlines Interpol’s policies, programs, and resources through decisions adopted by member states.
