Marrakech Hosts Competition Council Conference to Discuss the Future of Digital Platforms and User Protection
The International Competition Council conference held on Wednesday focused on digital platforms and their role in the national economy, amidst rising digitization and the expansion of these platforms in transportation, delivery, and services.
Ahmed Rahhou, President of the Competition Council, emphasized that digital platforms present an opportunity for growth and job creation, enabling emerging economies to develop national players. However, they may also dominate a significant portion of the added value for service providers, creating market imbalances.
Rahhou called for a gradual and proactive regulation of platforms to avoid excessive legislation or delays, allowing for early intervention to address issues before they become difficult to resolve without hindering innovation.
Younes Skouri, Minister of Economic Integration, noted that the reform of the Labor Code encompasses part-time work, remote work, and the platform economy, aiming to correct imbalances and ensure the protection of workers’ rights.
Riad Mazour, Minister of Industry and Trade, stressed that regulation is a tool to ensure transparent and inclusive markets, reaffirming the need to redefine the relationship between platforms and local representatives, and to protect data and consumers. He announced the preparation of an e-commerce law and the development of two national platforms to support data and startups.
