King Mohammed VI inaugurates the International University Hospital Complex in Rabat and launches the University Hospital Center in Agadir
His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, accompanied by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, presided over the inauguration of the International University Hospital Complex Mohammed VI in Rabat on Monday. This facility aims to establish a new generation of medical infrastructure that focuses on enhancing high-quality healthcare services nationwide and providing advanced training in health professions.
His Majesty also issued directives for the opening of the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center in Agadir, which is set to be a distinguished medical hub that will significantly improve healthcare and training for doctors in the Souss-Massa region.
The International University Hospital Complex Mohammed VI in Rabat, established by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health, embodies a royal strategic vision for developing a modern and intelligent medical infrastructure that prioritizes patient care and integrates the latest medical and research innovations.
The complex spans an area of 280,000 square meters, featuring a university hospital with an initial capacity of 600 beds, expandable to 1,000, and the Mohammed VI University of Science and Health, which can accommodate up to 8,000 students. The hospital includes over 30 centers of excellence, 24 modern operating rooms, and 143 critical care beds, in addition to advanced medical equipment, including the first positron emission tomography and MRI machine in Africa, a robotic pharmacy, and a unique hyperbaric oxygen therapy unit.
The university offers a comprehensive academic structure, including six colleges and higher schools in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, nursing sciences, and health engineering, along with an international center for medical simulation, enhancing the development of national competencies in the health sector.
The complex has adopted an environmentally sustainable approach, attaining an “Excellent” level environmental quality certification. It also features 8,800 square meters of photovoltaic panels that cover over 10% of its energy needs, reducing carbon emissions by 40%.
The Mohammed VI University Hospital Center in Agadir, built on a 30-hectare site with a cost of 3.1 billion dirhams, comprises 867 beds and several specialized medical centers, including 19 operating rooms and five emergency rooms, along with a fully integrated sterilization and robotic pharmacy center. For the first time in Africa, it will incorporate surgical robotic technology, enabling precise and minimally invasive surgeries to international standards.
This reference center is expected to benefit around 3 million people and will enhance healthcare access for citizens while bolstering the capabilities of the Souss-Massa region in treatment and medical training, alongside creating thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities.
Through this dual achievement, His Majesty King Mohammed VI reinforces the trajectory of reforming the national healthcare system by investing in modern facilities, developing human capital, and ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare services.
