China Suspends Port Fees on American Ships for One Year in Gesture to Ease Trade Tensions

On Monday, China announced the suspension of port fees imposed on vessels associated with the United States for one year, in a move aimed at facilitating maritime trade and contributing to easing ongoing trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

The Chinese Ministry of Transport clarified that this measure, which took effect at 1:01 PM local time (05:01 GMT), includes fees applicable to American ships and those engaged in trade activities with the United States.

This decision is part of a package of technical measures recently adopted by Beijing to reduce transportation costs and support foreign trade amid slowing global demand and persistent challenges in supply chains.

The announcement coincides with a relative improvement in diplomatic relations between Beijing and Washington, following a series of signals of economic thawing. China had previously extended a partial suspension of additional tariffs on certain American goods and granted new import licenses in agriculture and technology sectors.

Maritime transport is a key pillar of trade relations between the two countries, with trade volumes surpassing $580 billion in 2024, despite ongoing disputes over industrial subsidies, sensitive technologies, and national security issues.

By temporarily alleviating port burdens on American ships, Beijing seeks to enhance the fluidity of trade and establish a climate of practical cooperation as bilateral economic discussions intensify in preparation for the upcoming U.S.-China summit.
