Bensaid: The Legal Framework of the National Press Council Needs Enhancement and Independence
On Monday, Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mahdi Bensaid, revealed in the House of Representatives that the goal of the draft law concerning the reorganization of the National Press Council is to strengthen the institution’s powers and provide a more robust legal framework that enables it to perform its tasks more efficiently within the sector.
In response to a question regarding the performance of the temporary committee managing the affairs of the press and publishing sector, posed by the Justice and Development parliamentary group, the minister explained that the draft law includes a crucial new provision aimed at establishing a committee to oversee elections. This committee will address various issues that may arise during the election and appointment processes, with the aim of overcoming the shortcomings recorded in previous instances.
Bensaid added that efforts are underway to complete the approval process for the draft law to allow for the organization of upcoming elections, emphasizing that the press community alone is authorized to choose its representatives, free from any external interference.
He underscored that the government’s role is to strengthen the legal framework of the council and empower it to exercise its responsibilities with full independence. He pointed out that the draft law grants every party the right to challenge any decision within the council, thereby enhancing transparency and reinforcing governance in managing the profession’s affairs.
