Akhannouch: Southern regions account for 57% of national investments in the fishing sector due to their attractiveness to investors
The Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, praised today in the House of Representatives the pivotal role of the fishing sector in the southern regions, noting that these areas effectively contribute to the national economic recovery by covering 57% of national investments in the sector.
During the monthly accountability session dedicated to the topic of “Development of the Southern Regions of the Kingdom,” the Prime Minister attributed this high percentage to the attractiveness of these areas for investors, thanks to their port infrastructure and strategic location.
He added that the southern regions are implementing major structural projects in the fishing sector with a total budget exceeding 3.49 billion dirhams, which includes the construction of 16 equipped unloading points and fishing villages, the establishment of modern fish markets in Laayoune, Boujdour, and Tan-Tan, and the widespread digitalization in public auctions. He pointed out the unprecedented dynamism experienced by the aquaculture sector, highlighting that the Dakhla region alone has 240 licensed farms with investments exceeding one billion dirhams.
Akhannouch indicated that the expected production from aquaculture farms is approximately 92,000 tons annually, creating more than 11,000 direct and indirect job opportunities. He emphasized that these achievements come in the context of an increase in private investments in fishing industries from 90 million dirhams in 2010 to 494 million dirhams in 2024, as well as an increase in direct employment, which is expected to reach 33,000 positions by 2024.
