Tarfaya: Significant Increase in Traditional Fishing Landings Contrary to National Trends

Tarfaya’s coastal and traditional fishing landings have seen a remarkable increase during the first eight months of 2025. According to data from the National Office of Fishing, the quantities landed rose by 76% to reach 22,877 tons, compared to 12,987 tons during the same period in 2024.

This increase has also had financial implications, as the commercial value of the catch rose by 37%, surpassing 310 million dirhams, compared to 226 million dirhams last year.

Surface and White Fish Lead the Charge

Surface fish played a significant role in this performance, with landings jumping by 87% to 18,142 tons, valued at 88.89 million dirhams, compared to 9,677 tons and 56.09 million dirhams until the end of August 2024. Meanwhile, white fish also showed impressive performance, with landings increasing by 91% to 2,575 tons, with an estimated value of 49.39 million dirhams, compared to 29.46 million dirhams a year ago.

Local Dynamics Diverging from National Trends

In contrast, national landings for coastal and traditional fishing in Morocco exhibited a slight decline. Nationwide quantities landed reached 682,672 tons by the end of August 2025, marking an 11% decrease compared to 2024. In terms of value, it remained relatively stable at approximately 7.37 billion dirhams, compared to 7.41 billion dirhams during the same period last year.

These figures highlight the growing role of Tarfaya as an active regional hub in the fishing sector, thanks to improvements in sector organization and the enhancement of marine product value.
