The National Office for Food Safety has launched a nationwide campaign to vaccinate cattle in Morocco against the viral disease known as lumpy skin disease, as a precautionary measure to protect the national livestock after outbreaks were detected in several European countries since June.

According to the office’s data, the campaign began in September 2025, and by mid-October, more than 315,000 cattle had been vaccinated, with plans to continue the operation across various regions of the kingdom until the entire national herd is covered.

Lumpy skin disease is a viral infection that affects cattle and is primarily transmitted by insects, posing no risk to human health, according to an official from the National Office for Food Safety, who confirmed that Morocco remains free of any cases.

In 2024, the office conducted a proactive vaccination campaign covering border areas as part of a strategy aimed at enhancing prevention and monitoring the movement of animals to minimize any potential spread of the infection.

The current campaign is being implemented free of charge for breeders, and the office has urged all stakeholders in the agricultural sector to actively participate in the initiative to ensure the herd’s immunity and maintain its health and productivity.
