National Strike of University Professors Marks the Start of the 2025/2026 Academic Year
As Moroccan universities enter the new academic year, tensions are rising after the National Union of Higher Education (SNESup) announced a national strike lasting 48 hours on October 6 and 7, 2025, in protest against what it describes as a “lack of seriousness in dialogue” with the Ministry of Higher Education.
This decision followed a meeting of the national office of the union in Rabat on September 29, where it was confirmed that recent rounds of negotiations with the ministry yielded no tangible results. The union accused the government of “delaying and unilaterally passing decisions,” without genuinely involving university professors.
This escalation comes amid increasing dissatisfaction within the academic community, as professors demand a review of their professional conditions and improvements in working environments, alongside a comprehensive reform of the education system.
The union has also called for organizing protest rallies in front of university presidencies in several cities, aimed at raising awareness and amplifying the voices of professors to public opinion.
This strike represents a new phase in the ongoing dispute between the union and the government and could adversely affect the start of the academic year if negotiations do not resume earnestly.
