Morocco Leads Africa and the Arab World with High-Speed Rail Network
The Kingdom of Morocco continues to establish itself as a leading force in modern transportation, as the latest global data for 2025 shows that Morocco ranks 13th globally in the length of high-speed rail networks, clearly surpassing its peers in Africa and the Arab world.
According to international statistics, the operational length of Morocco’s rail network is approximately 825 kilometers, while national plans indicate an ambitious future expansion to add nearly 640 kilometers of new lines, reinforcing the country’s position as one of the key contributors to sustainable transport development across the African continent.
This Moroccan superiority comes at a time when other African countries, such as South Africa, lack operational high-speed lines, and Egypt is still in the planning stages to implement a project extending over 3,300 kilometers, with no actual work commenced yet.
Globally, China continues to dominate this sector, boasting over 40,000 kilometers of high-speed rail, which accounts for two-thirds of the global network, followed by Spain, which has a network just over 3,700 kilometers.
The coming years are expected to see significant expansions in countries with strong planning capabilities like India and the United States, both of which are working to develop thousands of kilometers of modern tracks to shorten travel times and enhance economic connectivity between major cities.
