Morocco Strengthens International Cooperation to Protect Marine Resources Through New Scientific Partnerships

In a move that reflects Morocco’s commitment to enhancing scientific research in the field of fisheries, two memoranda of understanding were signed on Thursday between the National Institute for Fisheries Research, the international organization “Mercator Ocean” in France, and the First Institute of Oceanography in China. This took place during an international workshop discussing the challenges associated with small pelagic fish in the context of climate change and overfishing.

The agreements aim to facilitate the exchange of environmental data and develop scientific tools to support decision-making in fisheries management, especially under increasing pressure on marine ecosystems.

Representatives from the partner organizations emphasized the importance of collaborating with Morocco in areas such as environmental monitoring, scientific forecasting, and data exchange to keep up with climate changes and provide precise recommendations for fish stock protection.

The international workshop, organized by the State Secretariat in charge of fisheries in partnership with the National Institute, brings together a select group of experts, scientists, organizational representatives, and professionals. It discusses sustainable management models inspired by global ecological systems, focusing on integrating environmental considerations into public policies.

The workshop, running until Friday, is expected to conclude with a final session to formulate practical recommendations after addressing topics on the impact of climate change and the integration of environmental data in fisheries management.
