Government Report: A 14% Decrease in Butane Gas Subsidies in Morocco During the First Eight Months of 2025

A government report indicates a 14% decline in the subsidy for butane gas in Morocco during the first eight months of 2025. The data, included in the 2026 budget proposal, reveals a significant drop in the subsidy for a 12-kilogram gas cylinder from 64 dirhams in January to 42 dirhams in July, with a peak of 70 dirhams in February. The average support during this period was 53.47 dirhams, down from 62.2 dirhams in 2024.

According to the document, this decrease is linked to falling international butane prices and a strengthening of the dirham, alongside the implementation of a reform in the gas subsidy system effective May 20, 2024, which aimed to reduce the subsidy for the 12-kilogram cylinder by ten dirhams.

The report also notes that the lowest subsidy level was recorded in June at 42 dirhams, reflecting a gradual move towards fiscal restraint and a reduction in pressure on the compensation fund.

Observers confirm that the government aims to redirect subsidies more accurately towards the most vulnerable groups while ensuring the sustainability of the support mechanism amid international market fluctuations, maintaining price stability in the local market, and protecting the purchasing power of Moroccan households.
