Washington and Pretoria’s Divergence Highlights Morocco’s Role as a Trustworthy Regional Actor

The pace of tension between Washington and Pretoria has accelerated due to intertwined political and economic disagreements. The latest development was U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of his intention to boycott the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for November in Johannesburg, preferring instead to send his Vice President, J.D. Vance. Observers have viewed this step as a sign of diminishing confidence in South Africa’s ability to undertake leadership roles both continentally and internationally.

This American-South African divergence reflects an increasing need for reliable partners on the continent, positioning Morocco at the forefront thanks to its balanced diplomatic approach and strategic vision that combines internal stability with openness to international cooperation. The Kingdom has solidified its status as a regional model garnering growing support, particularly with its proposal for autonomy as a realistic option for conflict resolution and enhancing security and development in Africa.

Trump justified his stance by stating he was contemplating “sending someone else due to the major problems with South Africa and its very bad policies,” referencing deep-seated disagreements over issues like land reform and minority rights, as well as Pretoria’s controversial positions on sensitive international matters. Washington had previously reduced its aid to South Africa amid direct criticisms of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Observers believe that the absence of the U.S. President from the summit, taking place on the continent for the first time, undermines the symbolism of the event and underscores the necessity of stable African states capable of earning the trust of major partners, with Morocco continuing to strengthen its presence as a genuine bridge between Africa and the rest of the world.
