The Moroccan experience in prison management receives widespread praise from African prison officials

A number of African prison administration officials praised Morocco’s leading experience in respecting human rights within its correctional institutions during a high-level consultative workshop in Nairobi on Wednesday. They considered the kingdom a model to be followed on the continent.

Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons in Kenya, Crescentos Makokha, acknowledged Morocco’s rehabilitation and reintegration programs as exemplary, commending the development of infrastructure that adheres to the highest standards of human rights in training and health services.

In turn, Seychelles’ prison services commissioner, Janet George, pointed out that Morocco serves as a reference for respecting fundamental rights and the quality of training for prison staff. She expressed her country’s desire to benefit from this distinguished experience, particularly the National Center for Training Frameworks affiliated with the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reinsertion.

Aliou Cissé, the Director General of the Senegalese prison administration, described Morocco’s training experience in human rights as a model for Africa, referring to a cooperation agreement signed between his country and Morocco to enhance the capabilities of Senegalese prison officers.

This meeting, organized in partnership with the Kenyan government, the Special Rapporteur on Prisons of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, aims to exchange best practices and address the key challenges facing African prison systems, with Morocco represented by the Director of the Training Center, Abdul Rahim Rahouti.
