The 14th Session of the African Ministers’ Council on Water Kicks Off with Morocco’s Participation in Dakar

The 14th session of the African Ministers’ Council on Water commenced today, Monday, in Dakar, with the participation of the Moroccan delegation led by Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka.

The Moroccan delegation includes the Director General of Water Engineering at the Ministry, Abdel Aziz Zarouali, and the Kingdom’s ambassador in Dakar, Hassan Nasri.

The session, chaired by Senegal for the period 2025-2027, brings together water ministers and experts from across the continent to discuss challenges in managing water resources. Discussions will focus on developing legal and institutional frameworks, enhancing monitoring and data-sharing capacities, and activating innovative financing mechanisms to ensure equitable access to safe drinking water and sanitation services.

This gathering is part of the African Union 2063 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to accelerate socio-economic transformation and enhance the ability of populations to cope with the impacts of climate change, rapid population growth, and urban expansion.

The agenda also includes developing African visions and policies for water, to make it a central pillar for sustainable development, addressing issues from poverty alleviation to food security, supporting industrialization, adapting to climate change, and enhancing regional integration.

The African Ministers’ Council on Water is a specialized committee of the African Union focused on promoting cooperation, security, and socio-economic development across the continent through sustainable management of water resources.
