Suriname Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over the Sahara and Confirms Commitment to Autonomy Plan
On Monday, Suriname reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory, including the southern regions, considering the autonomy plan as the sole basis for achieving a political solution to the regional dispute.
This position was articulated in a joint statement signed by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and his Surinamese counterpart, Melvin Bouva, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The statement highlighted that Suriname has enhanced its diplomatic presence in Morocco since May 2022 by opening an embassy in Rabat and a consulate general in Dakhla, reflecting its desire to develop bilateral cooperation.
The Surinamese minister expressed his country’s gratitude to King Mohammed VI, praising His Majesty’s vision for South-South cooperation based on mutual respect, pragmatism, and solidarity. He also emphasized that this vision contributes to supporting sustainable development in Caribbean countries through tangible socio-economic projects.
