Saudi Arabia has been elected as a member of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) during the 69th General Conference of the agency, which was held this week in Vienna. Its membership will last until 2027.

The Saudi Press Agency clarified that this selection reflects “the international community’s confidence in the active role of the Kingdom and its efforts to enhance international cooperation and use nuclear energy for development and peace.”

The Board of Governors is one of the “main decision-making bodies of the agency,” comprising 35 members responsible for discussing sensitive issues related to the guarantees of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, reviewing financial statements, agency programs, and budgets, and providing recommendations to the General Conference.

Saudi Arabia previously held a seat on the board from 2022 to 2024.
