Portugal Reaffirms Support for Moroccan Autonomy Initiative and its Commitment to the Sovereignty of Western Sahara
In a move reflecting Portugal’s firm stance on the Moroccan Sahara issue, the Social Democratic Party, which leads the ruling right-wing coalition in Portugal, has renewed its support for the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco as a realistic and sustainable solution to the regional conflict. This affirmation came during a discussion session in the Portuguese National Assembly, where the party emphasized that the Portuguese position on this matter is “clear and unequivocal,” noting that the Portuguese government considers the Moroccan initiative the most serious and credible basis for resolving the dispute over Western Sahara.
This commitment was officially enshrined on July 22, 2025, through a joint declaration between Morocco and Portugal, reflecting both countries’ commitment to continue supporting this initiative on the international stage, particularly within the framework of the United Nations. The party also highlighted that this direction received praise from Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, who later underscored Portugal’s clear and unwavering support for the sovereignty of Western Sahara, along with recognizing the appreciation of Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch for the position expressed by the Portuguese government.
The Social Democratic Party stressed that Portugal has never engaged in communication with entities claiming false rights in Western Sahara, affirming that Portugal’s stances align with United Nations resolutions calling for a political solution acceptable to all parties.
