OCP Group Signs Two Agreements to Transform Carbon Dioxide into Sustainable Solutions

OCP Group, through its subsidiary OCP Nutricrops, has signed two memoranda of understanding with OCP Green Water and INNOVX. These agreements aim to repurpose the carbon dioxide captured at the group’s facilities in Jorf Lasfar and transform it into innovative solutions in the areas of water desalination and sustainable agriculture.

Details of the Agreements

The first agreement with OCP Green Water focuses on utilizing carbon dioxide in seawater desalination processes. This will be employed to adjust the acidity of the water and re-mineralize it, ensuring the provision of unconventional and reliable water resources for industrial and agricultural use, in addition to providing drinking water for major cities.

The second agreement with INNOVX aims to leverage carbon dioxide to support agricultural and industrial innovation. This includes the development of sustainable and low-carbon plant fertilizers and converting by-products such as “phosphogypsum” into value-added materials, thereby enhancing food security and contributing to a circular economy.

OCP’s Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

The signing of these agreements aligns with OCP Group’s commitment to achieving complete carbon neutrality by 2040. The group intends to rely on 100% renewable energy by 2027, while also increasing its desalination capacity to 560 million cubic meters annually by the same year.

According to Youssef El Bari, CEO of OCP Nutricrops, these steps represent “a critical phase in the path of decarbonization and turning climate challenges into developmental opportunities.” Ahmed Mahrou, General Manager of SBU Manufacturing, stated that the goal is “to reach carbon neutrality by 2040 through a responsible and innovative manufacturing model.”

These initiatives affirm Morocco’s role, through OCP Group, as a key player in converting climate and water challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth by combining industrial innovation, resource valorization, and support for global agriculture.
