Morocco Establishes Itself as a Regional Hub in Green Hydrogen

In a new move affirming Morocco’s ambition to become a key player in the clean energy sector, the steering committee responsible for “Morocco’s Offer” in hydrogen held a meeting on Wednesday in Rabat, chaired by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. The meeting served as a crucial milestone for accelerating the implementation of strategic projects associated with this promising sector, which is seen as a pillar of the kingdom’s green economy in the coming years.

Khalid Zidan, the Minister Delegated to the Prime Minister in charge of Investment, Integration, and Public Policy Evaluation, emphasized that Morocco has established itself as an attractive destination for foreign investments in green hydrogen and its derivatives. He noted that the meeting was dedicated to presenting the preliminary phase of the “Chabika 1” project. This project, signed in October 2024 in the presence of King Mohammed VI and French President Emmanuel Macron, is now entering a new phase involving in-depth studies in preparation for its execution.

Zidan indicated that the committee approved partnerships with five specialized companies following extensive consultations with various ministries and relevant national institutions, aiming to ensure integrated efforts and effective implementation of this initiative.

For her part, Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, explained that the meeting allowed for an assessment of the infrastructure requirements necessary to host six major green hydrogen projects, including ports, roads, and electrical networks. She confirmed that these projects are designed to achieve the lowest possible costs while ensuring high added value and a direct impact on the development of the regions that will host them.

With this dynamic, Morocco continues to strengthen its position as a future ground for green hydrogen investments, contributing to global energy transformation and supporting the development of its national economy.
