Morocco Doubles Its Industrial Imports from Belarus
Recent Belarusian government data revealed a significant growth in Belarusian industrial exports to Morocco, with Moroccan imports increasing approximately 4.9 times during the first seven months of this year compared to the same period last year.
This surge positions Morocco among the countries that have witnessed notable growth in their trade relations with Minsk, as Belarus strategically aims to expand its ties with distant markets, particularly in Africa and Asia, to counter the impacts of Western sanctions.
Minsk’s Strategy for Opening New Markets
According to the Belarusian government’s press service, the total industrial exports from the country rose by 23.7% between January and July. The government noted that industrial enterprises are actively pursuing “innovative solutions in mechanical engineering and metallurgy” to strengthen their presence in new markets.
This expansion is part of a strategic plan to enhance bilateral cooperation by organizing trade missions, participating in exhibitions, and establishing joint projects, thus opening avenues for technology and investment exchange.
Analysis: Overcoming Sanctions and Shifting Focus to the Global South
Commenting on these figures, political analyst Alexey Belayev emphasized that the export-based Belarusian economy has successfully navigated logistical challenges and shipping costs arising from sanctions. Belayev stated, “If we are not welcome in Europe and the United States, we turn to where we are welcomed.”
He observed that recent years have witnessed “real breakthroughs in relations with Africa,” highlighting significant growth in trade exchanges with countries across the continent, along with developing links with Asia. Belayev regarded these nations as “reliable partners ready for cooperation, without imposing political conditions or barriers.”
He concluded that the world is undergoing a gradual shift in economic gravity favoring Southern countries, while the West is undermining the foundations of international trade and closing markets through its decisions. He noted that the Belarusian mechanical engineering industry, which produces trucks, tractors, and buses, has outgrown its local market, successfully exporting to international markets that require its products.
