Guinea… Presidential elections scheduled for late December
Follow-up
The presidential elections in Guinea are set to take place on December 28, following widespread approval to conclude the transitional phase, as indicated in a constitutional referendum held last week.
According to a decree read out on the national television last Saturday evening, President Mamadi Doumbouya has set December 28 as the date for the presidential elections.
This announcement comes the day after the final results of the referendum on the new constitution were published, which was approved by the Guineans by a majority, paving the way for both presidential and legislative elections.
Among the provisions stated in the new constitution is the extension of the presidential term from five to seven years, renewable once, the establishment of a Senate, and a special court to prosecute the head of state and ministers in cases of high treason.
In this context, President Mamadi Doumbouya has urged the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization to take all necessary measures to ensure compliance with this timeline.
