Germany Launches “Jupiter” – The Most Powerful Supercomputer in Europe to Support Artificial Intelligence

Germany inaugurated the supercomputer “Jupiter” at the research center in Jülich, North Rhine-Westphalia, last Friday, in the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. “Jupiter” is touted as the most powerful computer in Europe, capable of executing a trillion operations per second, relying on approximately 24,000 processors produced by the American company Nvidia.

The computer, which occupies an area equivalent to half a football field, serves as a strategic asset for Germany and Europe in a fierce global race led by the United States and China in the field of artificial intelligence. Merz asserted that the project enhances Europe’s independence in computing capabilities and represents a pillar for “competitiveness and national security.”

The project cost about 500 million euros (580 million dollars). While focused on supporting artificial intelligence research, its applications will also include climate change, predicting extreme weather phenomena, medical research, and supporting energy transition projects.
