Dakar Hosts the Works of African Water Ministers with Morocco’s Participation

The 14th ordinary session of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) opened yesterday, Monday, in Dakar, with a Moroccan delegation led by Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka.

The delegation also includes Abdelaziz El Zaroali, the Director General of Water Engineering at the ministry, alongside Morocco’s Ambassador to Senegal, Hassan Nasiri.

This session is being held under Senegal’s rotating presidency for the period 2025-2027, bringing together African ministers and experts responsible for water to discuss issues related to water resource governance. Discussions will cover the alignment of legal and institutional frameworks, enhancing monitoring capabilities and data sharing, as well as mobilizing innovative financing mechanisms to ensure universal access to drinking water and sanitation services.

According to the organizers, this session aligns with the dynamics of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the sustainable development goals, focusing on accelerating the socio-economic transformation of the continent and enhancing its capacity to confront the impacts of climate change, demographic growth, and urban expansion.

The agenda also includes establishing a unified African vision and policy for water, making this sector a key focus of sustainable development strategies, whether in combating poverty, enhancing food security, or supporting manufacturing and regional integration.

The African Ministers’ Council on Water is a specialized committee under the African Union composed of the continent’s water ministers. Its aim is to promote cooperation, security, and socio-economic development, along with eradicating poverty through the integrated and sustainable management of water resources and improving access to water supply services.
