China Records “Hottest Summer” Since Data Tracking Began

China has experienced its hottest summer on record this year, according to the Meteorological Administration, as heatwaves continue in the south of the country.

In a post on social media late Monday, the Chinese Meteorological Administration stated, “From June to August this year, large parts of China have faced extreme heat, with average temperatures reaching 22.31 degrees Celsius,” marking it as “the hottest summer ever recorded.”

Authorities warned in July about the health risks associated with the heat in large areas of eastern China, with temperatures in the capital Beijing reaching around 40 degrees Celsius in June.

Meteorological officials in Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom previously announced record-high temperatures during the summer.

Human activities contributing to greenhouse gas emissions lead to longer, more frequent, and intense heatwaves.

China remains the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide, despite its pledge to peak emissions by the end of this decade and to achieve net-zero by 2060.

In recent years, the economic power has emerged as a global leader in renewable energy as it seeks to transition its economy away from coal consumption, which causes significant pollution.
