Trump: I Want to Try to “Enter Heaven”
Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that if he manages to achieve peace in Ukraine, this accomplishment may help him “enter heaven,” humorously adding that his chances for eternal bliss are currently slim.
The 79-year-old Trump previously hinted at his desire to end the war in Ukraine to earn the Nobel Peace Prize, which he often claims he deserves.
Following a summit at the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders aimed at finding a solution to the conflict between Kyiv and Moscow, Trump revealed another motivation for his peace efforts during a television interview on Tuesday.
During an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” a show aired by Fox News, Trump, speaking to the conservative audience, said, “I want to try to enter heaven if possible.”
He added, “I hear that I’m not in a good place, and that I’m really at the bottom! But if I can enter heaven, that would be one of the reasons.”
Trump, who has been married three times and faced two impeachment proceedings in Congress, is far from being regarded as a saint, having been embroiled in numerous scandals over the years. He also made history as the first American president to be criminally convicted for failing to disclose payments made to a porn star to buy her silence.
However, the Republican’s tone has become more spiritual since he survived an assassination attempt last year.
During his inauguration in January, Trump declared that “God saved me to restore the greatness of America.”
The former real estate mogul enjoys full support from the American religious right and is now attempting to present himself as more pious than he was during his first term.
In response to Trump’s desire to enter heaven through peace in Ukraine, White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt told reporters on Tuesday that “the president was serious” when he made that statement.
Levitt, who herself prays before daily press conferences, added, “I think the president wants to enter heaven, just like all of us in this room, I hope, want that.”
