The United States Reaffirms Its Recognition of Moroccan Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

A delegation of U.S. Congress members reaffirmed, on Friday in Rabat, the United States’ steadfast position supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern regions.

This affirmation followed discussions held by the delegation with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, during which the prospects for strengthening the strategic partnership between Rabat and Washington were addressed.

In this context, Congressman Mike Lawler expressed his satisfaction with the trajectory of cooperation between the two countries, particularly regarding the southern regions. He recalled the U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its territory and the autonomy initiative proposed by the Kingdom in 2007. He also expressed hope that this position would open the door to further American investments in the region, thereby bolstering the long-standing relations between the two nations, reminding that Morocco was the first country to recognize U.S. independence in 1777.

Lawler further praised Morocco’s role, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, in promoting peace and stability regionally and continentally, emphasizing the growing importance of the bilateral partnership in security and economic development.

Meanwhile, Congressman Richie Torres lauded the robust friendship and strategic cooperation between Rabat and Washington, highlighting the U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its territory, a position affirmed by former President Donald Trump. He added that Morocco, thanks to its unique geographic position at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, represents the best partner for the United States in the North African region.
