The Pharmacists’ Confederation Threatens Escalation Over the Drug Pricing Regulation

- in Society

The Moroccan Confederation of Pharmacists has announced its transition to a phase of heightened protests, signaling severe consequences for the healthcare sector in response to a new government decree that sets drug prices, which they regard as a threat to the stability of pharmacies and citizens’ right to treatment.

The Confederation stated that discussions with the Ministry of Health have lasted for years without producing results, prompting them to break their silence with symbolic measures, including pharmacists wearing black armbands from August 18 to September 9, 2025, culminating in a national demonstration in front of the Ministry’s headquarters in Rabat.

The union clarified that the ministry is ignoring its legitimate professional demands, accusing it of freezing essential reforms in the sector, particularly in the context of expanding universal health coverage. They added that the new decree, which was approved without consulting the affected parties, jeopardizes the stability of the pharmaceutical market and could lead to economic, social, and health repercussions.

The Confederation urged all pharmacists to participate widely in the anticipated protest program, emphasizing that the government and the Ministry of Health bear full responsibility for any potential outcomes of the escalation.

The coming days may reveal whether the ministry will reconsider its position or if tensions between the pharmaceutical community and decision-makers in the healthcare sector will continue.
