The number of national livestock in Morocco has increased to nearly 33 million heads, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests. This announcement follows a census conducted across all provinces and regions of the kingdom from June 26 to August 11, 2025, which recorded 32,832,573 heads of livestock.
The ministry clarified that the distribution of the livestock is as follows: sheep 23,158,248 heads, including 16,348,449 females; goats 7,474,172 heads, including 5,293,805 females; cattle 2,094,109 heads, including 1,556,842 females; and camels 106,044 heads, including 91,432 females.
This census was conducted in response to the royal directives aimed at replenishing the national herd at all levels, based on professional and objective standards. It also aims to establish an accurate and updated database regarding the numbers and types of livestock, contributing to improving the sector’s productivity and sustainability and enhancing national food sovereignty.
In light of the census results, the ministry announced the cancellation of the suspension of customs duties and value-added tax on the importation of sheep, goats, and powdered milk starting from the end of September 2025, while the suspension of duties on the importation of cattle will continue to support the gradual formation of the national herd.
The government confirmed the allocation of approximately 11 billion dirhams to support livestock breeders, covering feed costs, maintaining females intended for breeding, reducing debt, organizing vaccination campaigns, and providing technical support to the herd, with the value of the support to be calculated for each beneficiary based on the number of livestock counted and the numbered tags issued by local committees.
