The administration of President Donald Trump dealt a significant blow to what remains of the separatist illusions of the Algerian regime, which has long sought to undermine the unity of Morocco, by transforming its historic recognition of the Kingdom’s sovereignty over the Sahara from a mere diplomatic statement into tangible reality on the ground, according to a report by the French magazine Jeune Afrique.
The magazine noted that the U.S. State Department’s Investment Committee gave the green light for American investments in Morocco’s southern provinces amounting to an initial value of $5 billion, reflecting a shift from verbal support to concrete steps that affirm Moroccan sovereignty and provide U.S. companies with opportunities to establish themselves in the Sahara.
The report confirmed that the Sahara issue has become a priority in U.S. foreign policy, as evidenced by Trump’s message to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Throne Day, where he reaffirmed recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and described the autonomy plan as the only fair and lasting solution to the conflict.
Jeune Afrique also pointed out that the new U.S. ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan III, and President Trump’s special envoy to Africa, Mosab Boules, called on Algeria to engage in serious dialogue regarding the implementation of the autonomy plan, placing Algeria’s regime in a situation it cannot ignore.
The magazine regarded Washington’s decision in December 2020 as a strategic turning point, prompting major countries such as Spain, France, the United Kingdom, and Portugal to align their positions with the American stance, thereby reinforcing the status of the autonomy plan as the sole solution to the conflict in the Sahara.
The report concluded that the steadfast American commitment represents an important diplomatic leverage for Morocco and an opportunity to end a chapter that has lasted fifty years, while Algeria’s attempts to delegitimize Moroccan sovereignty remain merely an illusion in the face of the international reality.
