Texas Finalizes Electoral Map to Boost Republican Gains, California Responds with Similar Move for Democrats

The Texas Legislature has officially approved a new electoral map that could enable Republicans to gain five additional seats in the House of Representatives during the upcoming midterm elections in 2026.

The text, which awaits the signature of Republican Governor Greg Abbott, redraws district lines in a way that reduces the voting power of Democrats, a practice known as gerrymandering.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated in a post on his Truth Social platform that this development represents “a pathway to five additional seats in Congress and a means to safeguard rights, liberties, and the nation.”

Democrats, who are a significant minority in the state legislature, attempted to obstruct the bill earlier in August by fleeing the state to Chicago and New York in order to disrupt the quorum for over two weeks. However, their return ultimately led to the completion of the voting process this week.

Texas currently holds 38 seats in the U.S. House, with 25 belonging to Republicans. Party leaders aim to increase this number to 30 starting next year.

In contrast, California, led by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, is moving in the opposite direction by preparing an electoral map that could provide Democrats with five additional seats. The state legislature approved a decision on Thursday to put a referendum on the ballot for November, which would transfer the redistricting responsibility to lawmakers instead of an independent commission.
