Spain: Increase in “Hirak” Attempts During August Despite Security Monitoring
The Spanish navy announced the thwarting of several irregular migration attempts that originated from the northern coast of Morocco towards Spain, taking advantage of the geographical proximity of just 13 kilometers across the sea between the two shores.
According to Spanish media reports, the heatwave experienced in August, along with calm sea conditions, encouraged smuggling networks to intensify their activities in the northern cities. Several boats were intercepted, and migrants were rescued who had opted for individual attempts, often ending up lost at sea or on the outskirts of Spanish shores.
Despite ongoing security coordination between Moroccan authorities and their Spanish counterparts, organized networks specializing in human trafficking remain active during this time of year, especially in July and August. This complicates efforts to mitigate this growing phenomenon.
