Significant Decline in Seizures of Smuggled Plastic Bags in Morocco During 2024
Moroccan customs authorities recorded a notable decrease in the volume of seized prohibited plastic materials in 2024, according to the annual report by the Directorate General of Customs and Indirect Taxes (ADII).
The report indicated that the seizures of plastic bags amounted to only 64 tons, marking a 76% decline compared to 2023. Additionally, the amount of plastic granules used as raw materials fell from 115 tons in 2023 to 96 tons in 2024.
The administration attributed this positive development to intensified operations targeting smuggling networks and enhanced surveillance within warehouses and industrial zones, which has contributed to tightening the noose around clandestine manufacturing units and curbing their illegal production.
Data from the period between 2016 and 2024 show that the volume of seizures peaked in 2021, reaching a total of 283 tons of plastic bags, before gradually declining in subsequent years—indicating the deterrent effect of customs measures implemented.
