The American news agency Reuters reported that President Donald Trump is leaving the possibility of U.S. air support for Ukraine open.
The Pentagon’s statement indicated that U.S. and European planners have developed military options “to be appropriately considered” by national security advisers.
Meanwhile, defense leaders from the United States, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine gathered in Washington, D.C. from Tuesday to Thursday.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also serves as national security adviser, held a conference call on Thursday with his European counterparts to discuss options.
An American official told Reuters that Rubio spoke with British National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, the chief of staff for the President of the European Commission, Bjorn Siebert, and national security counterparts from France, Italy, Germany, and Finland.
The source familiar with the matter stated that final details still need to be worked out, but European countries will provide “the lion’s share” of any forces involved in security guarantees for Ukraine.
