Morocco strengthens energy security in Gharb via new hybrid station
Morocco has launched a new initiative to enhance energy security in remote areas by establishing a hybrid power station at the Gharb border center in the Oued Ed Dahab-Lagouira region, with an estimated cost of 61.8 million dirhams. The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water has announced an international tender for the execution of this project, which is expected to be completed within 18 months and will cover an area of 10 hectares.
The project relies on a mix of photovoltaic solar energy and diesel, supported by an advanced battery energy storage system (BESS) that allows for stable energy supply even during peak periods. The station will include solar panels with a capacity of 1.5 megawatts and a storage system with a capacity of 1.5 megawatt-hours to ensure continuous electricity supplies.
This project represents an important addition to the infrastructure in border areas, aligning with Morocco’s strategy to increase reliance on clean energy and promote sustainable development.
