India: US Tariffs Are Unfair

In a speech at the World Leaders Forum 2025 organized by the Economic Times in New Delhi, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar described the United States’ decision to increase tariffs on his country for purchasing oil from Russia as “unfair.”

Jaishankar deemed the American tariffs as “unjust and unreasonable,” citing India’s necessity to buy oil from Russia and emphasized that negotiations with Washington are ongoing.

He stated, “They say we are financing and supporting the war (between Russia and Ukraine), but trade between Russia and Europe is greater than trade between India and Russia.”

He further added, “If your argument is energy, then Europe receives a larger amount of energy. If your argument is about who trades more, they (Europe) do more than we do.”

Jaishankar stressed that India has the right to determine its national interests and continues negotiations with the United States despite existing tensions.

In the same vein, the Indian government announced on Friday that it would suspend postal parcel shipments to the United States starting August 25 due to the tariffs imposed by the U.S. on India.

It is worth noting that U.S. President Donald Trump announced on August 6 that a 25% tariff would be applied to goods coming from India due to its purchase of Russian oil.
