Adam Aznou: “If I were in Yamal’s place, I wouldn’t have chosen Spain”

Adam Aznou, Everton player and member of the Moroccan national team, stated that if he were in Lamin Yamal’s position, he would have chosen to represent Morocco without hesitation, emphasizing his strong conviction and identity rooted in his Moroccan heritage. Aznou remarked in statements to the “Post United” program: “Yes, if I were in his place, with the same thoughts I have now, I would choose to play for Morocco.”

Regarding the background of his former Barcelona teammate’s decision, Aznou clarified that he did not seek to influence Yamal’s choices, as he was aware from the beginning that Yamal would represent Spain. He stated: “I didn’t try to convince him; I knew well that he would play for Spain. I just told him: ‘You will stay, and I will leave. Follow your heart, do what you think is right, and I will respect your decision, whatever it is.’”

While Aznou chose a different path in defense of the “Atlas Lions” jersey, Lamin Yamal made history with “La Roja” after impressing greatly in the UEFA Euro 2024, significantly contributing to Spain’s championship win, despite his young age of 17.

As for Aznou, he continues his journey with the Moroccan national team, with his sights set on appearing in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and further establishing his place within the new generation of Lions.
