A Moroccan consortium is leading a major project to expand Tangier’s Ibn Battuta Airport, aiming to transform it into an integrated air hub in the Mediterranean region, with a budget of approximately 1.9 billion dirhams. This initiative is part of the “Airport Plan 2030,” and its goal is to increase the airport’s capacity to 7 million passengers annually.
The construction work has been entrusted to a consortium of four prominent Moroccan companies: MENASTEEL INDUSTRY, SYSTHERM, SUMC, and MAGHREBNET RTABI ET CIE, reflecting confidence in national competencies to execute large-scale infrastructure projects.
The project includes expanding airport infrastructure by adding 55,000 square meters, constructing a new passenger terminal, enlarging aircraft parking areas, and building a modern control tower, along with integrating advanced digital systems to enhance service quality and safety.
Beyond its engineering aspects, this project embodies a national strategic vision to position Tangier Airport as a regional and continental air hub, capitalizing on the city’s unique geographic location at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, along with its modern infrastructure, including the Tangier Mediterranean Port and high-speed train line.
The expansion is also part of national preparations for major sporting events that the kingdom will host, notably the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and the World Cup 2030, necessitating comprehensive upgrades to air reception facilities.
The total cost to upgrade Tangier Airport exceeds 3.2 billion dirhams, as part of a national investment program that is the largest in the aviation sector, with a total budget reaching 38 billion dirhams, encompassing several strategic airports across the country.
