United Nations Commends Morocco’s Commitment to Combating Sexual Violations in Peacekeeping Missions
Christian Sanders, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Special Coordinator for Improving the Organization’s Response to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, conducted a working visit to Morocco from June 23 to 27, 2025, as part of the UN’s “zero tolerance” policy towards such violations.
The visit focused on three main areas that reflect Morocco’s dedication to fighting these actions and its unwavering support for the UN’s efforts in this domain.
First, attention was drawn to the participation of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces in peacekeeping operations and their role in preventing incidents of sexual exploitation and abuse, through the adoption of strict standards and disciplined behavior within Moroccan contingents deployed in various conflict zones.
Second, the visit reviewed the judicial and administrative work undertaken by the Military Court of the Royal Armed Forces, in coordination with the Ministry of Justice, concerning the investigation and judicial tracking of violations committed during peacekeeping missions. A specific report was presented on this type of case, highlighting the deterrent and monitoring mechanisms employed by Moroccan authorities.
Third, the visit included the training center in Tifnit in the southern region, which prepares individuals before joining military contingents in peacekeeping missions, including training related to professional conduct and prevention of violations, particularly those linked to sexual exploitation. The ongoing training programs and the guidance provided to soldiers and officers at this center were also examined.
The UN official’s visit served as an opportunity to reaffirm Morocco’s commitment to a responsible and effective partnership with the United Nations, in the context of respecting international law, protecting vulnerable groups in conflict areas, and ensuring the credibility of peacekeeping operations.
