Nigeria and the European Union Launch Cultural Program to Revitalize Museums and Creative Industries
Follow-up
Nigeria and the European Union have launched an ambitious cultural program titled “Museums and Creative Industries for Inclusive Growth.” The initiative aims to enhance the role of culture and heritage in economic and social development by promoting museums and developing the skills of those working in the creative sector.
The initiative was officially presented during a ceremony held in the capital, Abuja, attended by Nigerian government officials, representatives from the EU delegation, and figures from the local cultural scene. The project benefits from European funding amounting to 4 million euros and will be implemented by the EU delegation in Nigeria in partnership with the Nigerian Ministry of Information and Culture.
The program focuses on three main pillars: modernizing and promoting national museums, training professionals in cultural and creative industries, and promoting cultural diversity at both national and international levels.
Samuela Isopi, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, confirmed that the project reflects a shared commitment to making culture a cornerstone of sustainable development, emphasizing that the EU is focused on a long-term approach to strengthening creative systems while preserving cultural heritage.
In addition to its cultural dimensions, the program aims to achieve clear economic goals, considering the increasing significance of Nigeria’s creative industries—such as music, film, fashion, and visual arts—in diversifying the economy and creating job opportunities for youth.
This cooperation comes as part of the broader partnership between Nigeria and the European Union, which prioritizes youth issues, education, entrepreneurship, and culture in its strategic agenda.
