Morocco Studies the Option of Ships for Electricity Generation in its Energy Strategy

Morocco is considering the option of using ships for electricity generation as part of its energy strategy.

The Turkish company Karadeniz Holding, which specializes in producing electricity through floating power plants, has confirmed that Morocco is a promising and strategic market due to its leadership in renewable energy and growing dependence on natural gas.

During the African Energy Forum, Ali Hajjaj, the company’s Vice President of Sales in Africa, highlighted that Karadeniz is offering Morocco flexible solutions based on liquefied natural gas, including floating ships and storage and regasification units (FSRU). This allows the kingdom to import gas from multiple sources at competitive prices while ensuring reliable and immediate power supply.

He noted that these solutions provide an ideal transitional alternative for securing energy without the need for long-term investments in land infrastructure, which is suitable for Morocco while awaiting the completion of the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project. These floating ships enable rapid energy deployment and adaptability according to demand needs by using multi-fuel engines, including liquefied natural gas and liquid fuel.

Karadeniz Holding is among the leading global players in this field, offering its services in over 17 countries, including 10 African nations, with an operational capacity exceeding 1,700 megawatts across the continent. These ships provide what is known as a “ready value chain,” from gas import and storage to regasification and electricity generation, directly connecting to national grids.

This anticipated step extends experiences from other Arab countries such as Iraq, Lebanon, Sudan, and Syria, which have relied on this energy model to overcome electricity supply crises. However, Morocco, according to observers, operates in a different context as it seeks to employ this model as a complementary option within an ambitious energy strategy aimed at achieving a balanced and sustainable mix.
