Morocco Launches a Strategic Irrigation Project at Kadoussa Dam to Enhance Water Security and Agricultural Development
On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Ahmed Bouari, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, announced the launch of a strategic irrigation project associated with Kadoussa Dam in the Errachidia region, with a total investment close to one billion dirhams. The project aims to enhance water security and support sustainable agricultural development in the Drâa-Tafilalet region.
Initiated in 2018, this project addresses the challenges posed by climate change by developing irrigation agriculture and managing water resources effectively. It will allow the irrigation of approximately 5,000 hectares of land, including 825 hectares of traditional oases, benefiting around 16,600 residents and creating numerous local job opportunities.
The project is funded from various sources, with the French Development Agency contributing 42%, the Green Climate Fund 21%, and the Moroccan government budget providing 37%. It is part of major national strategies such as “Green Morocco” and “Generation Green,” accompanied by measures to promote sustainable agricultural practices and rehabilitate traditional irrigation systems.
This project represents a significant step in enhancing the resilience of Morocco’s oases to climate change and supporting social inclusion and food security in the region.
