Moroccan Asparagus Sets Record Numbers and Enters New Global Markets
Morocco has achieved significant growth in its asparagus exports over four consecutive seasons, continuing an exceptional performance in the current season running from July 2024 to May 2025. During this period, exported quantities reached approximately 968 tons, generating revenues nearing $6.6 million, representing a 47% increase compared to the previous season, according to the specialized platform “EastFruit.”
Despite not being among the country’s main agricultural exports like tomatoes or sweet peppers, Moroccan asparagus has shown gradual development. Recent results reveal promising potential for this sector. The adoption of modern agricultural techniques has extended the export period, which previously centered around March and April, to include additional months this year, with shipments expected to continue until October, enhancing the prospects of achieving a new record in export volumes.
Morocco has strengthened its position in the Belgian market, which accounted for over 62% of total asparagus exports during the current season after it entered the market for the first time last year. The Spanish market has regained its second position after previously declining. Meanwhile, both France and the United Kingdom maintained stable import levels compared to previous seasons.
Additionally, Morocco has expanded the scope of its exports beyond traditional European markets, marking the first export shipments of asparagus to the UAE, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, raising the number of importing countries to nine from seven last season. This geographical expansion has improved Morocco’s global ranking in this sector, rising from 19th place in 2023 to 15th in 2024, with promising prospects for further advancement in upcoming seasons.
